Manchester City Council's chief executive has told the city's next generation of Jewish communal stars that resilience is the secret of leadership.

Sir Howard Bernstein was speaking at the graduation of participants in Manchester UJIA's first lay leadership programme.

Surveyor Barrie Taub said the year-long course had broadened his previously "limited" communal involvement.

He was looking to help the Federation of Jewish Services welfare charity with advice on its property interests. Patricia Perlman-Dee, 33, a private banker with Barclays who came to Manchester from Sweden, said she would be developing financial strategies for communal organisations.
