Plans are afoot to establish another London eruv. Members of the Orthodox community in the Southgate area have launched a campaign to fund a local religious boundary.
One of those behind the project is Ezra Carlson, who told the JC that around 80 per cent of members of his synagogue, Cockfosters and North Southgate, were over 50. Twenty per cent of members were aged between 71 and 80.
He believed an eruv would attract younger families to the shul. It would link up with existing eruvs in Barnet and Woodside Park.
“It’s not a selfish eruv,” Mr Carlson said. “It’s for the community in Cockfosters, for the Adeni community, and helping to connect Jews in other communities.”
On Sunday, the shul hosted its first fundraiser towards the estimated £100,000 cost, which was attended by more than 150 people.
Project leaders hope planning permission will be obtained by the end of the year and that the eruv will be operational before the close of 2019.
They are working with architect Daniel Rosenfelder, who is an eruv specialist.
