Speaker John Bercow reflected on his family’s migration to Britain at a Westminster event for former child refugees who came here on the Kindertransport.

Marking the 75th anniversary of the Parliamentary debate that led to their rescue, the event began with a ceremony to rededicate the commemorative plaque unveiled in 1999 in gratitude for Parliament’s decision in November 1938 to start up the Kindertransport.

Paying tribute to the Kinder, Mr Bercow also noted the huge strides made in the protection of human rights since the Holocaust. Others at the rededication included Baroness Boothroyd, who was the Speaker when the plaque was installed, and Lord Dubs, who arrived in Britain on the Kindertransport. The 60 Kinder then enjoyed tea in the Strangers’ Dining Room.

The event was organised by the Association of Jewish Refugees, whose Kindertransport committee chair Sir Erich Reich said: “This special occasion gives us cause to celebrate, but also to recognise the significance of the debate that led to our rescue for which we, and our families, will be eternally grateful.”
