Jewish Care is backing a campaign by activist group Citizens UK to improve social care in the country.
Citizens UK has drawn up a charter setting out ways to secure “a better deal” both for those needing care and the care providers.
Among its goals are to ensure that care workers are trained in dealing with dementia and other mental health conditions and that home visits by carers last at least 30 minutes. Jewish Care director of care and community services Neil Taylor said that while backing the initiative, “to achieve the ambition set out in the charter there is a need for social care to be funded adequately. The charter accepts there is a need to build political momentum in the run-up to the 2015 election.”
The campaign is seeking to attract cross-party commitment to its objectives.
Charlotte Fischer — who works within the Jewish community for Citizens UK — said the campaign had grown out of conversations with local groups, including synagogues and churches, which had highlighted the concerns of exhausted children looking after parents and care workers feeling that their job had become impossible.
