Maccabi GB is spreading its health conscious wings to the north with the appointment of Oliver Grant as its first regional sports development co-ordinator, in partnership with UJIA.
Mr Grant - who has spent the past year working for Streetwise as northern project worker - will engage with communities from Birmingham to Scotland promoting sport, health and well-being. One of his first tasks will be to help increase sports activities at the Zone youth centre in Leeds.
He has a long-time involvement in Jewish sport, having played football for Manchester Maccabi, which he still represents.
Mr Grant said that his new role will have parallels with his Streetwise work in assisting "the personal development of a child. Technology has taken over children's lives so they may be inside more and they may get only an hour of PE at school."
His aim is to establish regular programming at the clubs within his region geared towards healthy living, stressing that the sporting side will not just be about football. "I want to reach all ages, boys and girls. If a child is not interested in football, we can find them an activity they will like."
