Reading Synagogue has been awarded almost £95,000 towards urgent roof repairs from the government-backed Listed Places of Worship: Roof Repair Fund.
The century-old roof, adorned by an Oriental cupola, is a feature of the Moorish-style structure, which also incorporates impressive stained-glass windows. It is the only purpose-built Orthodox synagogue in Berkshire.
Welcoming the award, shul president Sarah Firsht said it was “a lifeline. Our smaller numbers mean that members’ subscriptions can no longer provide the large sums necessary to repair our roof.” Building work will start next year.
A Jewish community was established in Reading some 130 years ago and the synagogue opened in 1900. It currently has just over 100 member families.
