A £4 million fund was launched this week to provide essential support to UK-based Holocaust survivors and refugees from Nazism.
The Six Point Foundation has been established with some of the money generated by the disposal of the assets of the Otto Schiff Housing Association, which worked with survivors.
It is estimated that it will be operational for up to seven years, or until all the funds have been distributed.
Medical needs, transport expenses, heating bills, repairs to key appliances, painting and decorating and the cost of moving to sheltered accommodation are among eligible expenditure.
Most disbursements will be under £1,500 but higher amounts will be awarded in exceptional cases - for example, burial costs, including stone-setting. People can apply for assistance on an annual basis.
The charity believes the "one-off grants will make a substantial difference to the recipients' lives, particularly where households exist on minimal income and people have few if any savings to rely on".
Foundation chair Susan Grant said: "We know from talking to other organisations which work with Holocaust survivors and refugees that many people are in need of financial assistance. We expect to receive a significant number of applications and want to assure people that as long as their need fits the foundation's criteria, we will consider their request."
