1960s JC found in time capsule at Norwood site

articlemain

The JC has a headline role in a time capsule found by builders working on a £16.5 million leisure and health centre for Lambeth Council and Lambeth NHS.

It is being constructed on the old Norwood Hall site, which was once home to the Norwood orphanage. Former Norwood residents Tony and Priscilla Seager were invited to examine the contents of the capsule with Councillor Lib Peck, Lambeth’s cabinet member for regeneration.

Along with other journals was a copy of the JC from 1962, when the orphanage was demolished.
A report in that edition referred to the discovery of a time capsule from 1861, when the foundation stone for the original orphanage was laid.

The capsule contents have been offered to the Norwood Old Scholars Association and Mr Seager pointed out that as well as helping former residents in need, “we try wherever possible to preserve anything to do with our heritage”.
