The United Synagogue has playfully pledged to change its shul names to honour England’s football heroes if they win Euro 2020.

It has announced on Twitter that trustees had agreed “they will rename Cockfosters and N Southgate Synagogue Cockfosters and Gareth Southgate Synagogue in honour of the England manager,” if England beat Italy in Sunday’s final.

They invited community members to propose other name changes for their shuls to celebrate England players following Wednesday’s semi-final triumph over Denmark.

The lighthearted tone of the tweets has found favour with senior government ministers.

In other suggestions, trustees said that “Kingston could be renamed King-Stones after the defender's flawless showing while New West End could become New West ‘Enderson. Luton might be called Luke-ton following the left back's world class performances.”

They also proposed that “Chigwell & Hainult could become Chilwell & Hainult after the Chelsea player.”

Another possibility was “hanging Magen Avot to Magen Pickford, having conceded just once all tournament.”

A spokesperson for the US said: "We love all the suggestions that have come in and how it's made people smile."
