Calls for boycott of Jewish News posted around north London

The posters accuse the free weekly of covering Israel unfairly

Notices criticising Jewish News’ “disgraceful” coverage of Israel have appeared on street stands and walls in north-west London.

The pages, headlined “THE ANTI ISRAEL JEWISH NEWS”, appeared in Golders Green and around Temple Fortune.

“Week after week, sinister front page headlines attacking the democratically elected government of Israel, giving credence to Israel’s enemies”, they said.

It claimed: “We have enough enemies to deal with, we don’t need the ‘Jewish News’ to add to that.”

It accuses the weekly paper of being unfair towards Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and describe it as “worse than when anti-Israel Islamists were in government.”

The posters’ anonymous author expresses particular frustration with last week’s JN front page in which the word “Pogrom” was written in large letters over an image of Huwara, the town where settlers carried out a revenge attack following a shooting by a Palestinian terrorist.

The author argues: “Last week’s front-page headline ‘Pogrom’, where ONE Palestinian was killed in a revenge attack for murdering 2 Jews, was an absolute DISGRACE and an affront to REAL POGROMS that Jews suffered such as the FARHUD in Iraq, where over 100 Jews were killed and thousands injured.

“The naivety of the Jewish News editor, in splashing the word ‘POGROM’ over its front pages is an insult to all those who have experienced real pogroms in our community, and will only cause an increase in antisemitism.”

Finally, it pleads “Jewish communities all over London say: Enough is Enough. Take it – Bin it. Do not support, Do not advertise.”

It is not clear who put up the posters or when they were put up.

Richard Ferrer, Editor of the Jewish News, said in a statement: “Jewish News reports Jewish news. Did we like reporting on what happened at Huwara? Of course not. Do we want to run endless reports and columns about crackpots being prime movers in the Knesset? Of course not. We would we rather focus entirely on all the good things Israel does. But is this kind of thing news? Of course. It always has been and always will be. An IDF commander calling the attack on Huwara a 'pogrom' should be front page news in every Jewish newspaper.

"There is no sugar coating or rose tinting. There is just news. Book burners stick silly posters on newspaper distribution bins. We report news.”
