Cabinet Minister Robert Jenrick has pleaded for the community to continue adhering to the strict rules around social distancing during Pesach, saying: "This will be a Passover like none of us have known before."

In a message given the JC, the Communities Secretary added: "Throughout history the Jewish community has proven to be one of the most resilient and adaptable of any people and will do so again".

Mr Jenrick said people had to respect the guidelines on stemming the coronavirus pandemic, which include a ban on wider family gatherings, "however much it goes against our traditions on Passover."

Mr Jenrick has been at the centre of the government’s efforts to fight the Covid 19 pandemic, regularly chairing the daily press conference from Downing Street.

But the MP for Newark revealed that alongside his wife, an Israeli-born corporate lawyer, and their three children, that he would be sitting down for Seder night at home with only his immediate family.

He said: "My family will be experimenting with our first Zoom Seder, using the marvels of modern technology to celebrate with relatives in the safety of our own homes.

"We may not be physically together, but communities seem tighter than ever, and the importance of health, family and kindness ever more apparent."

Repeating the government’s mantra to the entire country that they must "stay at home, which will protect our NHS and save lives", the 38-year-old politician wrote also of the need to ensure that those who find themselves alone over Pesach do not also feel lonely.

He said: "Each of us has the power to protect others, but only if we adhere to these guidelines, however much it goes against our traditions on Passover.

"I hope you too can celebrate Passover from home, but ensure those apart from us do not feel alone. Chag sameach."

Mr Jenrick had previously spoken to the JC about taking his "three young Jewish children" to cheder classes.

He also said of the Prime Minister last November: “I know Boris Johnson well and I’ve seen throughout my time at his side his support for the Jewish community in this country, his support for Israel and his complete intolerance of antisemitism in all its forms."
