Board fears 2016 London Marathon could clash with Pesach

The London Marathon may clash with the second day of Pesach next year, hampering the efforts of Jewish charities and runners.

April 24 is one of three dates being considered for the 2016 London Marathon, according to the Board of Deputies, who released a statement saying such a move would be “damaging” for organisations such as World Jewish Relief and Kisharon.

Last year’s 26.2-mile run attracted hundreds of runners who entered on behalf of Jewish charities, raising a total of £80,000 for various causes.

A Board spokesperson said: “If the London Marathon takes place on the second day of Pesach, many Jewish people will not feel able to participate on a day when strenuous activity is generally avoided.

“Importantly, Jewish charities will not feel comfortable asking their supporters to take part at this time. This would be particularly damaging for the Jewish charity sector, which always participates in the marathon in great numbers.”

The Board indicated that they had contacted their worries to the race’s organising team, which includes Jewish chief executive Nick Bitel.

Mr Bitel said it would be regrettable if the second day of Pesach was chosen, but that it remained a possibility.

“The organisers try to avoid clashes with major religious festivals of all faiths but this is not always possible and, for instance, in the past the event has been held on Palm Sunday," he said.

“If the event is confirmed for April 24 2016, it is noted that this would regrettably be the second day of Passover and that as a result some Jewish people would be unable to take part. However, if that is the only date that is available having taken into account all other factors, then this is the date that would be confirmed.”

The date will be confirmed after the 2015 event.
