Bernie the menorah lighter

The most striking aspect of the Jewishness of Democratic presidential challenger Bernie Sanders is how little comment it has drawn.

But while the self-declared socialist may be no shul-goer, he is certainly not a shrinking Israelite.

Lubavitch recall that when their first giant menorahs started appearing at Chanucah, they attracted complaints from some who challenged the display of religious objects in public space.

But when he was Mayor of Burlington in Vermont, Mr Sanders supported the erection of such a menorah in his local patch and actually lit one.

Not only that but during the 1980s he twice designated Education Days in honour of the Lubavitch Rebbe's birthday.
