creates a siddur that you can download to your iPhone
August 21, 2008 23:00Calling all iPhone users - particularly those with a penchant for praying. US-based technology buff Barry Schwartz has created an iPhone-friendly siddur - not to be used on Shabbat, of course. The application, which can be downloaded on any iPhone or iPod Touch, acts as a weekly-prayer book. It provides Ashkenazi and Sephardi versions of davening, including weekday Shacharis, Mincha, Ma'ariv, plus standard brachot.
Mr Schwarz, 28, is the founder of RustyBrick, a New York technology firm specialising in customised online technology. He claims the company's creation is the only siddur available for the iPhone. "We wanted to build something that we could use ourselves," Mr Schwartz tells People. Approved by Apple earlier this month, the application has been attracting between 50 and 75 downloads a day.
Mr Schwarz says: "A lot of people walk around with pocket-sized siddurs, so if you travel, this is the perfect aid." It also provides a Jewish calendar and enables users to search for the nearest minyan.
Mr Schwartz, an Orthodox Jew, has also recently launched Tehilim - Psalms - for the iPhone. Forthcoming features include a Mizrach (East) compass, to show you which way to pray, and a setting whereby you can store your preferred nusach, or style of prayer service.
