Times and JC columnist Melanie Phillips is known for the strength of her opinions and steadfast bravery in the face of hostile opposition. She might well need all that and more after revealing in last week's "Big Debate" at Jewish Book Week that, when defending Israel at various venues for TV's Question Time, she feels free from criticism only among "ill-educated people" in "armpit towns" in the north of England.
