Andy Murray's historic Wimbledon win was "a thing of beauty", according to the British player's Jewish former coach.

Brad Gilbert, who coached Murray between 2006 and 2007, said the defeat of world number one Novak Djokovic was full of guts and class.

The victory had lifted the pressure off Murray's shoulders, and would allow him to go on to claim more Grand Slams, overtaking Djokovic at the top of the player rankings.

Murray triumphed in three sets to claim the men's singles title, ending a 77-year wait for a British winner.

Writing for Mail Online, Gilbert said that the crowd had been the key factor in the victory, with 99 per cent of Centre Court backing the British player.

Gilbert, who represented the USA in the 1981 Maccabiah Games and describes himself as a "neurotic Jew", worked with Murray for 16 months, lifting him to number eight in the world rankings.

They split after Murray decided he wanted to take his career in a new direction.
