From my deluxe room on the 35th floor of the Peninsula Bangkok, I am mesmerised by the glittering Chao Phraya River. From the floor to ceiling picture window in my hotel room, I get an amazing view of the "river of kings".
While other international hotels are on the east bank of the river, the Peninsula Bangkok nestles on the west bank in an enclave of its own.
Built in a W-shape to give every room a river view, it has a landscaped garden and riverside terrace.
The interior is old world classic charm complemented by modern comfort with Asian chic.
There are only ten rooms and two suites per floor. All are spacious and come with every amenity and facility. Suites are sumptuously furnished and some come with terraces and outdoor jacuzzis.
There is a wellness centre with Asian and European spa treatments and great dining outlets. For the health conscious, Naturally Peninsula offers Vitality on a Plate menu to stimulate the five senses with its herbs and vegetables grown in the hotel's own garden.
Cantonese dishes are on the menu in its fine dining Chinese restaurant Mei Jiang while the Thiptara offers authentic home-style Thai cuisine. The latter is fashioned out of antique pavilions known as salas, with a steep roof and open-sided structures that have been transported and reassembled from the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya.
The teak floor decking circles a banyan tree. Tables are shaped for intimaty. The alfresco dining area right on the river bank is the best place to enjoy the river breeze. The River Cafe & Terrace and the River Bar are great to enjoy the view at night.
One of the highlights is the sunset cruise along the Chao Phraya River in the hotel's traditional boat to the Temple of Dawn further. Canapés, champagne and drinks are served while the boat gently cruises, joining the bustling river traffic until the magnificent temple materialises in the golden glow of the sunset.
