King of the castle

This summer is celebrating the nation’s castles, as well as the people who lived in and defended them throughout history, as part of English Heritage’s #LoveCastles season.

The programme of events will take place at more than 60 castles from Cornwall to Northumberland, including Norman earthworks and royal fortresses, as well as sandcastle building workshops plus a competition to build the best sand sculpture throughout the summer.

Board the Endeavour

A full-scale replica of Captain Cook’s famous ship is opening as a permanent visitor attraction in Whitby from next month. 

HM Bark Endeavour uses interactive features and clever design to transport visitors back to life on board an 18th century ship, with all its hardships, as well as details of the scientific discoveries made on the ship’s expeditions.

The opening is part of the celebrations around the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s first expedition to the Pacific in the original Endeavour, built in Whitby in 1764.
