Chelsea is a beautiful part of London — and it knows it. With its lush green private squares, designer clothes shops and minimalist, trendy restaurants, the streets ooze luxury.
And myhotel Chelsea fits right in. This is a hotel that is too cool for capital letters, too sumptuous for spaces between words.
It’s situated on the corner of Ixworth Place, a quiet street lined with grand red-brick buildings, the hotel’s bright and airy lobby was all the more welcoming thanks to a stand of cupcakes next to the reception — I appreciated the gesture.
The website tells of a hotel “where Sex and the City meets Brideshead Revisited”. I’m not sure exactly what this means, but my room had a fully-tiled en-suite bath, pretty windows, feminine pink walls and matching silk throw which would no doubt have left Carrie Bradshaw feeling at home.
If she had a room on the top floor she would no doubt have swooned over the views over this trendy neighbourhood.
The restaurant was deserted when I went down to have some wine and nibbles in the evening so I had the small terrace with its pretty window boxes all to myself. The menu offered “world tapas”, which in reality was a selection of meats and cheese. They were pleasant enough and downed with an agreeable house red. The service was polite and cheerful and the experience turned out to be a delightful start to the evening.
A myriad of restaurants were just short stroll away Brompton Road - each as pricey as the last. Nearby is the Royal Court Theature and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
If you’re in London for an indulgent weekend and want to buy some Jimmy Choos and eat in achingly fashionable restaurants then this is the perfect hotel for you.
And although I’m no Carrie Bradshaw, I liked it too.
