Chandeliers, halogen lighting and three loos are not standard equipment in most Cornish self-catering cottages. You can find slate floors, whitewashed walls and other rustic accoutrements in many holiday homes, but all too often accompanied by damp, draughts and ill-equipped kitchens.

But Gambridge Barn, described by Classic Cottages as “chic”, actually exceeds expectations. Claire, who owns the property, has made a new stable conversion her decorating dream — and for fans of smart contemporary living, it works.

A large, elegant kitchen-diner with dimmable lights and a modern stove is what you want when eating in — and in this land of fresh fish, you are likely to want a couple of dinners at home, especially if travelling en famille.

A comfortable living room with squashy sofas, woodburning stove and large-screen TV with DVD player is also what you want for post-prandial curling up; this barn has it all — and it also welcomes dogs.

Upstairs, a large, beamed master bedroom has an ensuite shower-room and French doors lead on to a romantic garden adjoining a field of chic alpacas.

There is also a twin-bedded room and second bathroom with tub off the chandeliered landing.  Positively American in the sanitation department, there are three loos in total, including one downstairs.

Camelford is three miles; beaches and supermarket a 20-minute drive away.
