Possibly excepting "fetish", most of the season's key trends are perfectly adaptable for anyone buying for autumn with a view to Rosh Hashanah dressing.
There is retro, with the choice of looking back to the broad-shouldered, fur-clad glamazon of the 1940s (though hold the fur if the weather turns hot); the Mad Men chic of the 50s; the geometric shapes of the 60s; and the batwing sleeves and mid-calf dirndls of the 70s.
The prim/ladylike trend is another vibe which works well for synagogue dressing. A pussy-bow blouse in floral or animal print, or bright satin is shul-appropriate and lets you tick two more trends: print and jewel-colours. And if you team your blouse with a leather skirt, you are rocking yet another trend: leather, crafted this season, into every kind of garment including dresses, skirts, trousers and tops.
The over-the-knee pencil skirt is another key trend which is also a no-brainer for shul-goers. Even "androgyny" can be made to work for the New Year, if you choose a tuxedo jacket, a waistcoat or a version of the narrow-rever overcoat brilliantly done at Joseph last year and everywhere this autumn.
