Birmingham’s student community has enjoyed its busiest weekend of the year with three major events in as many days.
First up was a J-Soc-prepared Friday night dinner. In the past five weeks, the society has provided 750 Shabbat dinners for students in the city.
On Sunday, more than 200 Jewish footballers from campuses across the UK took part in the annual five-a-side competition, the Juefa Cup.
This year saw the introduction of a women’s league which was won by UJS office team The Pretty Committee, with star striker Emma Rickman scoring six goals and walking away with the golden boot.
The tournament also featured a barbecue, and teams took part in the Crossbar Challenge.
Men’s Juefa Cup winners Joelton Athletic’s 2-1 victory in the final saw them rewarded with a trip to the Bernabeu stadium to see Real Madrid play.
Event organiser Josh Colman said: “More then 70 per cent of the players weren’t previously J-Soc members. It is great that UJS is offering an alternative way to get involved.”
The fun culminated that evening with Ju Rave, the new and improved version of Booze 4 Jews.
More than 800 neon-clad students took part in the club night.
Emma Stone, J-Soc president, said: “This term could not have started any better. We have a fantastic mix of Jewish students in Birmingham.”
