Team Maccabi GB will also be sending a tennis delegation to the JCC Maccabi Campus Games and for their manager, Karl Adelman, one thing is more important than any medals they may pick up.
Adelman said: “While all the boys are passionate about their tennis and want to win, the most important thing will be taking part in such an important communal event, meeting people and making connections with peers from all over the States and the world, and making unforgettable memories.”
The “amazing group of boys” he has assembled are all from London, with two already having experience of a JCC Games, having played in Houston last summer.
Adelman added: “The boys all play tennis with a smile and up until this point they have been a pleasure to manage.”
The five boys play either for their local club and/or school teams, which helps to bring a mixture of experience to the squad.
Since being selected, they have trained together every month while also been playing at their own clubs.
Their final session together as a squad takes place on Sunday before they depart for the Games.
Adelman said: “From the very first meeting, their pride in representing their country has been truly inspiring. “I hope this experience gives them a deeper understanding of just how special and meaningful it is to be part of Maccabi GB and the JCC – it’s something they’ll carry with them for life.”
As to what he’s expecting from the opposition they’ll face, he said: “We’re expecting tough competitors from other countries. “Historically, the majority of players represent different American or Canadian cities and there are always a few Israeli players. “The Israelis are often the strongest – they send their best! “The heat is always tricky for British players who often haven’t had much experience in the American summer climate and we encourage regular breaks between games, hydration and using the shaded courtside areas. “The overwhelming feeling I have is a responsibility to ensure my athletes have the best time possible. “With some Israel tours being cancelled and the difficult positions some young Jews are finding themselves in, I just want my team to have an exceptional experience, celebrating Jewish identity and pride, through sport.”
Squad: Benjy Felix, Joseph Stimler, David Landmann, Sam Saron, Max Menton.
