Tony Platman may not have flown back from Japan as an England World Cup winner, but he did finish the tournament as the top goalscorer.
The 75-year-old scored ten goals to bag the Golden Boot at the Over 75’s Veterans World Cup in Tokyo, though it wasn’t enough to see them crowned champions, instead having to settle for a silver medal.
Germany, who played several ex-Bundesliga players, beat England 3-0 to claim the title, though the Three Lions did also manage to win a penalty shoot-out on their way to the final, seeing off Wales on spot-kicks in the semi-final.
Speaking about the tournament, Platman said: “It was a brilliant experience and from a personal perspective, way exceeded my expectations.
“I’m now hoping to continue to represent both England over 70s and 75s in their forthcoming domestic and international fixtures, leading ultimately to the World Cup next October on Australia’s Gold Coast.”
