The third and final Team Maccabi GB tennis squad heading to Israel for this summer’s Maccabiah Games we are previewing in the JC is a masters delegation, with players featuring in age groups ranging from 40 to 75.
Managing the squad alongside Caroline Clapper is Ben Harris, and he says he is delighted with the players they have brought together, saying: “There’s a strong mix of talent, experience, and passion.”
While the majority of the players are based in London, there is representation from across the country, which Harris feels “adds to the richness of the team dynamic”.
In terms of assembling the squad, he says: “It had its challenges; coordinating diaries, assessing ability, and ensuring everyone met the eligibility criteria, but the response was so enthusiastic that it became more about narrowing down great options than struggling to fill places.”
Those chosen bring a wealth of experience, with many having completed in previous Maccabiah Games and European Maccabi Games, something which Harris feels will prove to be “invaluable”. “They know what it’s like to play in high-pressure environments and understand the unique spirit of the Maccabi movement,” he says.
They also have some players who will be first-timers, who Harris says “will bring fresh energy and a real hunger to prove themselves”.
Training has begun in earnest, regular sessions with more planned in the lead-up to the Games.
“We’re focusing on match fitness, tactical awareness, and team bonding – especially for doubles pairings”, Harris explains.
“Preparation also includes mental focus, injury prevention and acclimatisation strategies for the conditions we’ll face in Israel.”
Noting how the players are “incredibly excited” for what lies ahead, Harris says: “There’s a real sense of pride in representing Team Maccabi GB on an international stage.
“For many, this is more than just tennis; it’s about identity, heritage, and community.
“I hope they walk away not just with great results, but with lifelong friendships, shared memories, and a deepened connection to the global Jewish sporting community.”
Expecting the standard of opposition they will face to be high, Harris continues: “Israel and the USA tend to bring very strong teams and the level across the board is extremely high, so we’re expecting a serious challenge.
“The heat will definitely be a factor, particularly for players more used to British conditions, but we’re planning for that in our training.”
Versatility will be key for the squad, given they will be competing in competitions across the board – the singles, doubles and mixed events.
As to what it means to him to be managing the squad, Harris says: “It’s a real honour. I’ve grown up with both tennis and a strong Jewish identity, and this role brings the two together in a really meaningful way. Helping to shape a team, seeing players improve and connect, and representing our country – it’s deeply fulfilling.”
Looking to ahead to what he hopes they can achieve next month, he concludes: “Of course we’d love to come home with medals. But just as important is the experience; playing top-level tennis, bonding as a team, and being part of something bigger.
“For me, success will be seeing players compete with heart, represent with pride, and return home enriched by the journey.”
