More than 100 dancers from all over the world have spent a week taking part in the annual Israeli Dance Institute’s summer programme, which culminated in a talent show on the last night.
Israeli dance fans and teachers flew in from 11 countries, including Argentina, Cuba, Colombia, Ukraine and Hong Kong, for the 48th annual Machol Europa camp.
After a Shabbat and weekend spent at hosts in north-west London, the group travelled down to Surrey, where they learnt new dances from world-famous choreographers Yael Ya’akobi, Shmulik Gov-ari and Dado Kraus.

Maurice Stone, founder of the Israeli Dance Institute, told the JC: “The course was very successful, with participants enhancing their teaching skills for both children in primary schools and youth in informal education. Attendees also learnt the latest dances from Israel.
“Given the very depressing environment for both Israelis and worldwide Jewish communities, we provided something positive for Jewish life in Europe, South America and further afield.” Slavyan Kanovski, 35, who was attending his fifth Machol Europa, said at the end: “It’s been a mesmerising week. The most fun part was the late-night partying, when we would dance non-stop until 2am and then had to get up the next day at 9am.
“It’s also been amazing meeting people from the opposite side of the world who have the same passion for Israeli dance. No other type of dance has such a nice, connected community.”

Elianne Srulevich, 30, from Montevideo, Uruguay, was attending her first Israeli dance camp in Europe. Hoping to bring back what she had learnt to the Jewish pre-school where she teaches dance and Hebrew, Srulevich said: “It’s been a wonderful week. I love the teachers and the choreographers, and I have made a lot of friends of all ages from so many different countries. I love Israeli dancing as it’s a way for me to feel closer to Israel and the Jewish part of my life, as well as being a way to connect with family and friends.”
