A rabbinical couple are celebrating a decade in office – and seeing the membership double at their shul.
Rabbi Daniel and Rebbetzin Alli Sturgess have seen numbers swell from 160 to over 350 since taking the helm at St Albans United Synagogue in Hertfordshire. It is now one of the fastest-growing communities in the US fold.
Before their arrival, the community had been without a spiritual leader for 50 years.
Rabbi Sturgess put the growth in membership down to several factors, including that “St Albans is a really nice place to live”. With its promise of bucolic green countryside, an easy commute to London and lower house prices than the capital, the area was attracting an increasing number of Jewish families, he said.
But he said that the main appeal was the friendliness of the shul. “Most importantly, our strength lies in how warm and welcoming our community is. We find that many friends and relatives of members who attend a simcha or event at our shul enjoy the experience so much that they end up joining – and we’re always delighted to welcome them.”
He described serving the community as "a real privilege”, saying: “Alli and I are so grateful to our community and the incredible, dedicated volunteers, who have partnered with us in building such a special, vibrant community. May we all continue to go Mei 'Chayil El Chayil – from strength to strength!”
The couple were celebrated by a tea at the shul, where the Chief Rabbi paid tribute to their dedication.
Chair Elissa Da Costa-Waldman delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude for Rabbi and Rebbetzin Sturgess’ tireless service, pointing out – to much laughter – that, unusually, the rabbi’s sermons were so popular that no one ever fell asleep during them.
Other treats included a poetic tribute by member Deanne Gold, and a rendition of I am the Very Model of a Modern US Rabbi, written by the synagogue chair and sung by Keith Appleby and warden Ian Rothstein, which parodied the famous Gilbert and Sullivan number.
Thanking and congratulating Rabbi and Rebbetzin Sturgess, Da Costa-Waldman said: “We look forward with excitement to the years ahead. We hope you will be with us for many more decades to come and that you will continue to be as loved and appreciated as you are today.”
