The owner of kosher butcher Silvermans has paid tribute to a much-loved staff member who has died aged 38 after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.
Zimbabwe-born Arthur Muponda – known affectionately as “Prince” after Prince Arthur – died after battling the disease for two-and-a-half years.
Colleagues and customers have now rallied round the family, raising nearly £8,000 in Prince’s memory through a Gofundme page set up by the owner of Silvermans, Stephen Grossman.
The father of two young daughters aged eight and six worked as a shop assistant in the Silvermans Temple Fortune branch for seven years.
“He was charming, friendly and so respectful of Jewish people,” Grossman told the JC. “He was loved by our customers, hence the amount of money that’s been raised in his name by numerous people who were just shocked that he passed away so quickly.”
Mr Grossman, who remembers hiring Prince, added: “He was always very sincere, and his attention to detail made sure that every customer was looked after.

“We used to call him the ‘maitre d’ of the shop floor,” he recalled, saying: “He would wish everyone a Shabbat Shalom, a Mazel Tov and a l’chaim on a celebration, and he wished us a Long Life when somebody passed away. He really got himself engaged in the Jewish community lifestyle and understood everything that was going on.”
Nelson Araujo, Prince’s brother-in-law and Silvermans’ head chef, also paid tribute, saying: “Arthur was a very kind and hardworking person. He was always helpful and treated everyone with respect.
“If he was not such a good person, I do not think people would have raised this kind of money.”
The funds raised will help support Prince’s daughters and contribute towards their future education, as well as a holiday.
“The money will help give the girls some joy and sunshine,” Mr Araujo said. “Some will go towards savings for them and also towards things for their education.”
