The Union of Jewish Students (UJS) has announced that Carolyn Bogush will become its new chair, following three months holding the interim position.
Bogush, who recently announced that she would be stepping down as the chair of cross-communal Jewish educational organisation Limmud after six years at the helm, will become the first female chair of the student body.
She said: “UJS exists to represent, support and empower Jewish students, and that mission has never been more important. Having worked with UJS for many years as a trustee and more recently as interim chair, I am proud to take on the role of permanent chair.
“I look forward to continuing to work alongside our fantastic student sabbatical officers, president, staff, trustees and partners to ensure UJS remains resilient, exciting and firmly student led.”
A spokesperson for UJS said: “Carolyn brings extensive experience in Jewish communal leadership, governance and strategy. She has also served UJS as a trustee for a number of years and is widely respected for her commitment to strong, values-led governance and for ensuring that the student voice remains central to decision-making.
“Her appointment reflects UJS’s strategic focus on being a student-led organisation underpinned by robust governance, clear accountability and long-term organisational resilience.”
Since joining the board, Bogush has worked closely with student leaders, staff and fellow trustees to support UJS, following a surge in antisemitism on campus after October 7. She has been focusing on the safety, wellbeing and representation of Jewish students, while supporting UJS’s long-term strategic direction.
Bogush took up the interim role at the end of October after the previous chair Daniel Dangoor stepped down.
UJS paid tribute to Dangoor’s leadership and said that Bogush’s appointment would provide “continuity, experience and strategic clarity as UJS continues to deliver its mission and long-term strategy”.
