Veteran Jewish athlete Roger Bruck successfully defended his 100m, long jump and high jump titles at the recent British Masters Championships in Derby.
The 86-year-old, a former Maccabiah Games and European Maccabi Games gold winner, added to his ever-increasing medal tally, though was still left disappointed having fallen 3cm short in the high jump, which would have lifted him to number one spot in the world.
With the Track and Field season coming to an end, Bruck has over the course of the past year broken the British high jump record on four occasions.
Bruck is not though alone in accomplishing fine achievements over the last 12 months. Gary Lustig, 78, at Brighton and Hove Athletics Club, has enjoyed another successful season, winning medals during the indoor season, and has now established himself as one of GB’s top sprinters, placed in the top five in the 60m, 100m, 200m and 400m events.
Rosalind Zeffertt, together with teammate Sarah Nachshen, has contributed greatly to Shaftesbury Barnet Ladies, where she was not only their top scorer at the Southern Masters League Finals, but finished third overall in terms of points won. A bronze medal pole vault winner at the World Masters Championships, she is still GB’s number one for this event in her age group. In the slightly younger age group, Nachshen has also contributed to Shaftesbury success, mainly over 100 and 200m.
Further down the age range, 22-year-old Isaac Hirshman Chandler this year represented GB at the World University Games. Growing up in Spain, with British parents, he started by competing in cross country at the early age of 14. Five years later, he moved to the UK to pursue a law degree and further his athletics at Birmingham University, where he contributed to the University’s cross country and track team. Helped by a sports scholarship, he has now moved on to Florida State University where he’s taken on a Masters degree and hopes to further his athletics career to the next stage.
