Real Masmid secured promotion to Division One on Sunday morning and their dream Maccabi GB Southern Football League (MGBSFL) debut season could get even better as they need just a point in their final league match to be crowned Division Two champions.
That match takes place this weekend against Chopped Villa – who must not only beat Real but go on to win their remaining three games to deny them the championship.
Real’s interim manager Nati Kind said: “You can’t really ask for much more. We’ve quickly made a name for ourselves, putting in some outstanding performances along the way, and the best part is we’re only going to get stronger.”
Real set up Sunday’s crunch match by beating Beitar Bushey 2-1 last weekend. Mikey Selby opened the scoring for them, before Josh Abraham rose from a Jonti Aremband long throw to head home and double their advantage.
Dan Salomon halved the deficit for Bushey, but Masmid held on to secure the vital win.
Bushey manager Saul Jackson felt his side deserved more from the match, saying: “We started slowly after a six-week break and it cost us two goals. Thereafter, we were the dominant team and should have got something out of the game. The difference on the day was they made better use of their set-pieces and we weren’t clinical with the chances we had.”
With a top-three finish still a possibility, he added: “It’s been a much-improved league season from us, but there are lots of frustrations.
“Every game we’ve lost has been by one goal so we’ve always been competitive.
“We’ll keep pushing, and hope to win the last two league games and see where that leaves us. We’re still confident we can pick up a trophy this year.”
Chopped Villa kept alive their slim title hopes by coming away from Wolverhampstead Wanderers with a 4-1 win.
Oliver Dagul scored a hat-trick after Harley Conway had bagged their opener. Simon Lousky scored for Wanderers.
Promotion hopefuls Temple Fortune beat joint-bottom side Mill Hill Minyan 6-3. Adam Grossman scored twice, with Joel Berman, Ben Krieger, Solomon Moore and an own goal completing the scoring. Assistant manager Sammy Samuelson said: “It was a well-deserved win but the three they scored were silly.”
Bocher Juniors moved off the foot of the table thanks to a stunning 7-3 win over third-place Hampstead Ducks. Yedidya Solomon scored a hat-trick, Mordy Grossberg converted two penalties, Uriel Isaac Saul claimed a 30-yard free-kick, and Amichai Lerer netted his first goal in 15 months. Manager Joel Ucko said: “I’m really pleased for the lads, and that’s a proper stylish three points and a real team performance.”
There were also five Peter Morrison second round ties played. HMH enjoyed their long trip up north, where they beat Leeds Maccabi U23’s 6-1. Zac Summerfield scored twice, with Saul Norton, Ethan Krell, Charlie Ezra and Joel Walters all on target. Geez Park Rangers also enjoyed success against northern opposition as they beat Manchester Maccabi on spot kicks.
Elsewhere, Sukkotingham Forest beat Redbridge Jewish Care B 6-1. Eytan Millan scored twice, with Josh Summerfield, Toby Anthony, Dillon Caine and an own goal completing the rout. Interim manager Julian Anthony said: “Quality won out over some enthusiastic tackling.”
Also through are Hendon United Sports Club, who saw goals from Jack Naftalin and Dovi Fehler seal a 2-1 win at Stopinsky. Finally, a goal from Reiss Feldman helped Lenton Orient U23s beat Oakwood A 2-1.
In the Maccabi Masters League, Maccabi London Lions increased their lead at the top of the table to six points as they thrashed bottom side Hendon Harriers 10-0.
Gideon Barnett scored a hat-trick, Jon Ketterman bagged a brace, with strikes from Scott Levy, Ami Wimbourne, Aviel Schwartz, Craig Sandford and a Michael Abraham penalty sealing the rout.
In the Charity Cup, Temple Fortune made it two wins from two as they won 6-1 at St John’s Wood Tigers.
Jonny Blain and Stefan Simons bagged two each, with Ben Shooter and Paul Franklin completing the scoring. Ilan Cohen netted Tigers’ consolation.
