The Jewish community in Borehamwood has – literally – set in stone their support for the new Chabad building in the town centre.
Over 100 locals and dignitaries came together on Sunday evening for a moving groundbreaking ceremony for the Jewish Life Centre, which is taking over the premises of a former bank.
Families inscribed their names and values onto bricks that will form part of the building’s extension, and guests signed a declaration of values which will guide the centre for generations to come.

Rabbi Chaim Hoch, who, together with his wife Leah, leads the Jewish Life Centre, said: “This building represents far more than bricks and mortar. It is the result of years of belief from this community. What began with a small marquee in a garden has grown into something much bigger, a permanent home for Jewish life in Borehamwood.”

Leah added: “We are deeply encouraged by the breadth of support this project has received. From civic leaders to families, professionals, donors and volunteers, this must be a collective effort. No contribution of time, energy or support is too small. We will bring this vision to life together.”
The groundbreaking ceremony was held in loving memory of Nigel Henry, whose passion for the project helped shape its vision. His children, Sophie, Emma and Ben, spoke to the guests about their father’s belief in the centre and their commitment to continuing his legacy.

The Mayor of Elstree & Borehamwood, Cllr Dan Ozarow, attended, together with the leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, Cllr Jeremy Newmark, and the leader of the opposition, Cllr Morris Bright.
Cllr Jeremy Newmark addressed guests, highlighting both the dedication of the leadership team and the positive contribution the centre would make to Borehamwood’s high street and civic life.
Rabbi Hoch said that although guests stood in what is currently a cold, disused building, “the atmosphere was one of passion, warmth and optimism” and the space “already felt charged with purpose”.

The new Jewish Life Centre will significantly expand Chabad of Elstree and Borehamwood’s space for learning, family programmes, youth initiatives and communal events.
Its main fundraising campaign will be launched during Purim to raise the remaining funds to complete the project.
Hertfordshire is home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the UK, with some 8,000 people identifying as Jewish living in Elstree and Borehamwood.
