A new congregation in Manchester has officially become part of the family of Masorti synagogues after being approved for membership by Masorti Judaism UK.
Kehillat Or Tzion, based in the south of the city, was founded in December 2024 and has quickly grown into an active Masorti congregation, recently celebrating the arrival of its 40th member.
Kehillat Or Tzion combines traditional halachic practice with an inclusive, modern approach, with men and women leading services together.
Zionism is central to the community’s identity, said its chair Jonny Becker.
The congregation’s founding board is supported by volunteer service leaders and has recently welcomed its own Torah scroll.
Becker told the JC: “We are delighted to have joined the Masorti UK family.
“Reaching 40 members is a real milestone for our community, and the warmth and welcome we have received from everyone at Masorti has meant so much to us.”
Rabbi Adam Zagoria-Moffet, the director of strategy at Masorti Judaism, said: "We at Masorti are honoured to have Kehillat Or Tzion join the movement. They exemplify so much of what Masorti is about – a modern outlook with traditional values, an inclusive community that takes Halachah seriously – really the best of both worlds, Jewish and secular.
"Or Tzion is lucky to have an amazing cadre of young and active lay leaders, and we are very pleased to see a home-grown traditional community adding to the rich tapestry of Jewish life in Manchester.”
