London’s two Jewish cricket clubs – London Maccabi Vale and Belmont & Edgware – faced off on Sunday afternoon in a friendly.
Vale, fielding a development side, took on BECC’s 2nd XI, with the latter winning the toss and opting to bat first on their home ground, Camdenians in Mill Hill.
Openers Elliott Mayer and Michael Blasebalk took the score past 50 before the latter fell. Mayer was eventually joined by No 4 batsman Yaakov Loebenstein and the duo struck an impressive boundary-laden century stand.
Mayer was unable to reach his ton, narrowly falling short as the balls ran out, with Loebenstein passing 50 before breaking his bat and then losing his wicket.
BECC’s opening bowlers were a little wayward, as the Vale Development side, set 220 to win, scored boundaries with aplomb.
Openers Jamie Hurwitz and Will Stevens got off to a very quick start, hitting a six in the first over. BECC did take an early wicket, but Stevens smashed 73, with the No 3 and No 4 both contributing 30-odd runs each.
Vale romped home to a comfortable win with seven overs to spare, with the only real spot of quality from BECC in the field coming from Dan Humphrey, who snapped up three wickets. BECC’s 2nd XI captain David Kay said: “It was wonderful to see so much talent on show between the two Jewish clubs.
“Elliott displayed his quality to bat through the innings, well supported by Yaakov. But with the ball, we were just a little too loose, as the young Vale side played very well. It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm and quality in Jewish cricket, and we all look forward to the next encounter.”
Vale Development side captain Jon Feigenbaum said: “Jewish cricket is alive and well, with this clash being testament to the efforts of both clubs.
“We showcased some more of our U15 and U18 players, mixed with a couple of experienced players, but Jewish cricket was the real winner!”
With just over a month remaining of the season, both clubs will be looking to finish 2025 strongly in their respective fixtures.
