As we continue our preview to this summer’s Maccabiah Games in Israel, this week we focus on the U16 Girls Football team, who are looking to create lifelong memories both on and off the pitch.
Managed by Adam Shelley, the squad have been chosen from all over the country, ranging from London to Manchester to Brighton.
Having assembled a strong selection, which Shelley describes as being ‘made up of some of the most promising young Jewish footballers across the country’, he says: “We’re delighted with the players we’ve assembled. The trials were competitive, but every player chosen has the qualities we’re looking for. The squad is well balanced across the pitch with a powerful desire to succeed and be the best version of themselves, whilst working together throughout their journey.”
Several of the girls are under 14 years of age meaning this will be their first Maccabiah Games, though they are already playing at strong regional and national teams, representing clubs such as Manchester United and Watford in the Junior Premier League (JPL).
Up to this point, the squad has been training once a week, though this will increase to three times once the girls have completed this season with their clubs.
Speaking about their preparations, Shelley says: “Our first friendly together resulted in a morale boosting 2-1 win against Goffs Oak JPL side and this has been the catalyst to succeed further. We want to leave no stone unturned and our attention to detail is at the highest level with UEFA coaches and experts in their field supporting the squad.”
Highlighting the important role the pre-tournament preparations will have on the team’s success, assistant manager Nathan Bloohn said: “At this level, the margins between winning and losing are incredibly small, which is why our focus on the finer details especially in set-pieces can be the difference between going home with a medal or missing out. Whether it’s a free-kick, corner or re-start, we approach each one as a moment to gain control, create chances, or apply pressure. It’s not just about rehearsing routines, it’s about knowing your role, understanding spacing, reacting under pressure, and committing to the smallest adjustments. A well-timed run or a perfectly placed delivery can change a game in seconds.”
Saying how much the girls are looking forward to the competition, Shelley says: “They’re incredibly excited and proud to be taking part, for many of them it’s a dream come true to represent Team Maccabi GB. The build-up has been full of energy, with everyone giving their all in training and really pushing each other to be at their best. They know this is a rare and special opportunity, and they are determined to make the most of every moment, both on and off the pitch.”
As to what he hopes they gain from it, he continues: “We hope their experience goes far beyond the football on the pitch. Competing internationally will challenge them to adapt to different styles of play and to face new levels of intensity and pressure. The girls will grow not just as footballers, but as young people. They have already developed greater confidence, resilience, and a deeper understanding of the game with friendly matches, a weekend in Lilleshall Sports Centre and a trip to play Women’s Super League club Brighton. They will further develop new friendships, experience different cultures, and create memories that will last a lifetime. No matter the outcome, we hope they return with a stronger sense of team spirit, pride in their journey, and a desire to keep improving.”
Echoing his sentiments is assistant manager Libby Poster, who says: “This tournament is about more than just results, it’s about the journey, the friendships, and the life lessons they will carry with them long after the final whistle. We want them to represent Team Maccabi GB with pride, respect, and unity both on and off the pitch.”
As to what it means to him to take charge of the squad, Shelley says: “Managing this team is an incredible honour and a privilege. To be trusted with leading a group of talented young female footballers, especially under the Maccabi Team GB banner, is not something I take lightly. It’s more than just a role; it’s a chance to shape their development, to be part of their journey, and to contribute to something so special.
“On a personal level, it’s both humbling and inspiring. Watching these girls grow technically, tactically, and emotionally reminds me why I fell in love with the game in the first place. Of course, we want to try and win matches but also helping them become confident, respectful, and resilient individuals. The management team see parts of ourselves in many of them, and it is incredibly rewarding to pass on lessons we have learned along the way.
“Representing Team Maccabi GB adds another layer of pride. Knowing that we are not just playing for ourselves, but for a nation, for our families, and for everyone who has supported us, brings a huge sense of responsibility. We want to lead and the girls to play with motivation, passion, integrity, and care.
“At the end of the day, managing this team means being a mentor, a motivator, and a believer. It’s about guiding these players through an unforgettable experience, and hopefully, helping to create memories and lessons that will last them a lifetime. This ethos has been built by Girls Football Chair Adam Myeroff who epitomises everything we are trying to achieve, we’re so grateful for his leadership and support. We’re also delighted to have Katie Icklow, our general team manager, who will be supporting both girls football teams at the Maccabiah Games.”
While keen to stress what he wants the girls to experience off the pitch, he is though looking to come back with a medal. “Our hopes are high and expectations are clear”, he says. “Our aim is for a medal and to grow stronger together as a team.
“The squad has shown exceptional commitment and drive in their build-up to the Games. With a strong emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and a shared ambition, the players are focused on one common goal – bringing home a medal for Team GB. We believe in their ability to perform at the highest level, and we know they have what it takes to challenge for a medal.”
