The by-election for vice-president of the Board of Deputies will be a two-woman race with Sheila Gewolb and Karen Newman facing off in next month’s election.
Gewolb, who was vice-president from 2015-2021 and sits on the Board’s executive as chair of its regional council, will be seeking third term as VP – which would be unprecedented in recent times. She represents Cardiff United Synagogue.
Newman, a trustee of the new Movement for Progressive Judaism, is one of the two independent co-chairs of the Board’s plenary meetings and sits on its constitution committee.
The by-election was caused by last month’s resignation of one of the three vice-presidents, Andrew Gilbert, who was elected in May 2024.
The election will ensure that the previously all-male officer team will include a woman.
The candidates, who required 20 nominations, were confirmed this week.
