June 18, 2025 22:36The community is in shock after the news that Rebbetzin Miriam Plancey has passed away – just days after her husband, Rabbi Alan Plancey.
They were the senior rabbinic couple at Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue from 1976 to 2006, before stepping into emeritus roles.
Announcing the news on the shul’s website, the community’s chair, Josh Moont, wrote: “It’s with tremendous sadness that we share with you the news that Rebbetzin Miriam Plancey passed away on Friday.
“She was loved for the years of quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and support she gave to so many. She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Rabbi Alan Plancey z”l, at whose side she stood for decades…Our thoughts are with the family during this extremely difficult time.”
The synagogue is keeping open its online book of condolences, which it had set up for people to share memories of Rabbi Plancey, so they can add reflections about his wife. The book will then be given to the family.
Speaking at her funeral, Borehamwood and Elstree senior rabbi, Alex Chapper wrote: “The grief is heavy. The shock is still fresh. It feels too soon. Too sudden. Too much. We can’t imagine how hard it is for the family. And yet…perhaps it makes sense.
“Because, just as we leyned on Shabbos, out of their deep respect and in the merit of her profound and unwavering loyalty, the Jewish people wouldn’t travel without Miriam. Rabbi Plancey couldn’t take his final journey without his beloved Miriam at his side either.”
He said that during their marriage, they had never spent a Shabbat apart. “They were inseparable in life, indivisible, true partners in every sense – and now they’re reunited in eternity.”
Rabbi Chapper paid tribute to the support Rebbetzin Plancey had shown many individuals in the community over the years, saying: “She was always there for others, selflessly for everyone else – her family, her friends, her community…
“She was a lifeline. A listening ear, a caring word, sage advice for everyone – a kallah needing reassurance, a mother overwhelmed, someone in distress – she made time for each of them. With patience. With insight. With love.”
Daniel Gillis, CEO of Camp Simcha, which was founded by the Planceys’ son Meir, said: “'We are so very sad at the passing of Rebbetzen Miriam Plancey z”l - so painfully soon after the sad loss of her beloved husband Rabbi Alan Plancey MBE z”l. Our thoughts are with their children Susy, Nechama, Meir and Nussi and their families at this difficult time.
‘It is a huge loss to all the family and the wider community, but they will live on through their amazing legacy. May her memory be a blessing.'
