Councillor Lawrence Williams will be a “proudly Jewish” Mayor of Bournemouth when he takes office at the end of the month.
His chaplain will be Rabbi Adrian Jesner of Bournemouth Hebrew Congregation, of which Councillor Williams is a past president. His mayoral charity will be the local Jewish care home, Hannah Levy House.
A former radio broadcaster who went on to own an advertising agency, the 66-year-old is “very proud to be representing not only the Jewish community but also my adopted home town. I will try to put a Jewish slant on my time as Mayor of Bournemouth.”
The Conservative councillor further hopes to lead a visit to Netanya, which was twinned with Bournemouth in 1984 by one of the town’s previous Jewish mayors, Councillor Michael Filer.
