Jewish cartoonist and filmmaker Zoom Rockman has won his first award for his animated Holocaust drama Survivor at the 14th annual WRAP Film Festival.
Produced by Lemon Soul, the film set out to preserve the first-hand testimony of Ivor Perl BEM and was awarded in the Best Human Rights Film category for its “groundbreaking” depiction of Perl’s experience.
“It’s an honour to have won Best Human Rights Film for Survivor at the WRAP Film Festival in London, especially with the calibre of the entries I saw on the night,” Rockman told the JC.
“I made Survivor as a counter to the rising Holocaust denial I’ve seen growing online over the years and the fact that I’m the last generation that can meet [Holocaust survivors] in person.
"When I met Ivor Perl BEM and read his testimony Chicken Soup Under the Tree [published by Lemon Soul] back in late summer 2023, I saw it as an opportunity to present a primary source to my generation and the next in a way that would be accessible to them.”

The film tells the story of Ivor’s life from 1944, when, at 12 years old, he and his family were forced by the Nazis from their home in Hungary to a ghetto, then to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. There, nine members of his immediate family were murdered. Only he and his older brother, Alec, survived.

Rockman said that awards such as this one “help the film reach outside of the Jewish community and give Ivor peace of mind that his story is being remembered”.

Nigel Canin, executive producer and CEO of Lemon Soul Publishing, said: “This is such an achievement. I’m so proud of Zoom.”
At the age of 12, Rockman became the youngest regular contributor to children’s magazine the Beano.
The two-time winner of the Political Cartoon Awards has since drawn for Private Eye and the Sunday Times.
Survivor has also been selected for the Berlin International Underground Film Festival in September.
The film is streaming in the UK on ITVX and is available internationally on ABC Australia, Netflix Israel, and ChaiFlicks in the United States and Canada.
