Masters athlete Roger Bruck added another four medals to his glittering trophy list – including a hat-trick of gold gongs – at last weekend’s British Indoor Championships.
The 86-year-old was representing Southern Counties Athletics Club at the Lee Valley Indoor Athletics Stadium, where he was one of 600 athletes, aged between 35-95 years-old, taking part.
Roger, who first won gold in the European Maccabi Games in Copenhagen in 1959, and again at the Maccabiah Games two years later, was in Enfield defending the three titles – 60m, long jump and high jump – he won at last year’s competition.
The meeting’s first day saw him win both the 200m and long jump events, the former he said was particularly pleasing as he “as he drew the notoriously tight outside bend which meant he was running ‘blind’ over the distance.”
The second day’s action saw him record his best distance over 60m for three years, though it wasn’t enough to secure him the win, instead being forced to settle for silver. However, his day ended on a high as he won the high jump event for a 25th successive time.
Last season was another extremely productive one for him, as he headed the British rankings for the high jump, where he broke the British record on four occasions, while he was also runner-up in the rankings over 100m,200m and long jump.
Saying afterwards how he has no intention of hanging up his spikes in the near future, his aim is to achieve the elusive gold in the World Masters at the age of 90, having twice won silver at World Championships, in Venice aged 80, and five years later in Gothenburg.
