Belmont and Edgware CC’s 2nd XI beat London Maccabi Vale’s Development XI, but the club’s 1st XI lost heavily to table toppers Langley.
The Seconds, captained by David Kay, faced rivals LMV’s young development side on Hampstead Heath Extension.
Kay won the toss and put the opposition into bat on a green pitch that promised variable bounce. Zack Feingold took two wickets and Harry Lewis snared the opposition’s skipper, giving him his long-awaited first scalp for the club.
BECC bowled out Vale out for just 79 in a comprehensive team performance in the field.
Those who did not bowl were given a bat, and Belmont knocked off the runs with the loss of just four wickets. Commenting on the win for his side, Kay said: “It was wonderful to get a victory, but more than anything, it was terrific to get 22 Jewish cricketers on the park.
“It was a true Jewish Sunday friendly, with everyone getting an opportunity to showcase their skills and enjoy the day.”
The firsts, fresh off a nine-wicket win over Metropolitan last week, faced a stiff task against trailblazing Langley.
The opposition won the toss and chose to bat.
Despite an early wicket, Langley’s opener smashed 168 after being dropped on seven, while their No3 also scored a ton, meaning the second wicket fell with the score on a mighty 297.
Most bowlers went at over 10 runs an over and a number of dropped catches cost BECC dearly. The team fought back in the last 10 overs, reducing them to 362/7.
In reply, the top order scored some useful runs, but it was to no avail against such a big total. BECC were dismissed after scoring exactly half of the opposition’s total. Club vice-captain Jack Mendel, who skippered BECC, said: “We simply dropped too many chances against a high-quality side.
“While some catches were harder than others, we were understandably disappointed not to capitalise on the opportunities we created.
“With just a few weeks left of the summer cricket season, we’re looking to end the year well.”
