One of the Progressive movement’s largest synagogues has announced its new senior rabbi.
Rabbi Greg Alexander will be at the helm of Alyth Synagogue from July 1.
The 3,300-member congregation of the Golders Green-based Reform synagogue was “absolutely delighted” by the addition to the rabbinical team, said Alyth chair of trustees Gary Lipman.
Rabbi Alexander will be succeeding Rabbi Golan Ben-Chorin, who felt the need to return to his family in Israel due to October 7 and the Gaza War.
“I am deeply honoured to be joining Alyth as senior rabbi,” he said. “Alyth’s commitment to courageous, compassionate Judaism and engaging community life speaks powerfully to me. I cannot wait to begin this next chapter together.”
Rabbi Alexander is currently senior rabbi at Temple Israel in Cape Town, where he is renowned as “a visionary leader, a soulful educator and a champion of social justice”, according to Alyth’s announcement. He has also been “heavily involved” in the global Reform Movement.
“I look forward to seeing him work in close partnership with our wonderful clergy team,” Lipman said. “Together, their combined talents will ensure our community continues to flourish and grow.”
