Boca Jewniors fold to leave league with 28 teams

Boca Jewniors have withdrawn from the Maccabi GB (Southern) Football League.

Managed by Sefton Monk, Boca had made a poor start to season 2017/18 – losing their first five matches in Division Two – and the decision to fold was confirmed before their scheduled match against Straw Hat Pirates last Sunday.

Of their five matches played, Boca had failed to score in three and conceded 30 goals. They were crushed 9-0 by new boys Fairlop FC and 8-3 by North London Raiders C.

In a statement, Monk told JC Sport: "After going strong and going unbeaten in pre-season - beating a Division One team in the process - our season looked promising.

"Unfortunately our manager, Dan Beresford, walked away a week before the first league game, with all the players he bought in also leaving. This left us with no manager and not enough players to be able to compete this season. To say it has been a struggle this season would be an understatement."

Monk went on to say: "After setting up the team seven years ago, playing alongside four of my brothers and good friends, it was great fun. Unfortunately times have changed and I felt it was time to close the door on that chapter of my life.

"I'd like to thank my trusted right-hand man and all-top top appearance record-holder Anton Nyman, as I could not have got through those seven years without him.

"Anton and I thought the best moment was last season, coming from 4-1 down to beat bitter rivals Hertswood Vale 5-4 on their home soil, and then completing the double over them in style at home, with a wonder goal from Brett Schuman."

The team’s records will be expunged as they failed to fulfil 75 per cent of their matches and leaves the MGBSFL with 28 teams.
