Spurs fans have been warned that they should not take flags with the star of David on to the club’s Champions League game in Italy next week.

Included in an article on the Tottenham website about travel to the Inter Milan match on October 20, is the statement: “Flags and banners with appropriate wording would be welcome at the stadium.”

However the announcement continues: “But the police authorities have advised that those flags showing the star of David will not be allowed access and may be confiscated.

    “Please respect this request.”

Spurs fan Benjamin Davis, 23, said: “It’s great that two of my greatest passions, religion and football, converge so closely.

”But in a foreign country which may not understand Tottenham’s Jewish cultural links, it is probably not necessary to bring attention to it.”

A Spurs spokesperson said: “It is common policy and normal ground rules at football grounds in the UK and elsewhere in Europe flags of an overtly religious or political nature will not be permitted.”

In 2009, Chelsea fans were caught on CCTV chanting "Spurs are on their way to Auschwitz", leading to a complaint from Spurs.
