Winning start for Wingate

articlemain

Wingate & Finchley manager Michael Stone has promised not to get carried away following the team's impressive start of four straight victories in the Ryman League Division One North.

Monday's 3-1 success against Hillingdon Borough saw the blues become the only team with a 100 per cent record following wins over Witham Town, Chatham Town and Great Wakering Rovers.

Stone said: "I'm very pleased with the players. The positive start to the campaign is reward for their hard work during pre-season. To play four matches in nine days and come away with maximum points is a credit to the players and staff and all the hard work being put in on and off of the field.

"We know that there is much to improve on and bigger challenges just around the corner. But we can certainly take some confidence from this start and the speed at which this newly assembled squad have gelled together."

Ahead of tomorrow's FA Cup trip to Northampton Spencer, he said: "I won't get carried away and neither will the players. We want to progress in the cup as the financial implications are important. Prize money for winning each round has increased by 25 per cent this season."

A home tie against Witham Town or Maldon Town awaits the winner.
