Wingate progress in Ryman League Cup

articlemain

Maccabiah star James Gershfield helped Wingate & Finchley surprise Premier Division Hendon in the Ryman League Cup.

Trailing 3-1 with the game in stoppage time, the Blues looked dead and buried. But Gershfield, a 60th minute substitute, hauled them to within a goal of the Greens after rounding the keeper and slotting home.

The tie was deadlocked after 90 minutes with the scoreline 1-1. Aron Freeman almost nicked it in normal time for Wingate but his shot was tipped wide by the Hendon keeper.

Wingate won the penalty shootout with Gershfield converting from the spot.

Wingate: Gavin King, Marc Weatherstone, Aynsley McDonald, Marc Henry, Ahmet Rifat, Daniel Nielsen, James Edgerley (sub: Aron Freeman 73), Michael Lenahan, Leon Smith (sub: Leon Nelson 100), Dave Laird, Chris Chase (sub: James Gershfield 60). Subs not used: Callum Horton, Craig Ellis.
