Waley-Cohen finishes fourth in the National

articlemain

Sam Waley-Cohen continued his record of success at the Grand National, finishing a worthy fourth in the race at Aintree on Saturday.

The amateur jockey riding 66-1 outsider Oscar Time was leading in the latter stages before being overhauled by eventual winner Auroras Encore, who also started at 66-1.

Waley-Cohen was runner-up on Oscar Time in the 2011 National, but thoughts of going one better this year evaporated with a superb jumping performance from Auroras Encore guided by his delighted jockey Ricky Mania.

Cappa Bleu (12-1) followed him home in second place, while Teaforthree (10-1) was third.

In total, 17 horses finished the race, but more significantly, all 40 runners and riders returned safely - organisers had made strenuous efforts to make the fences safer after two horses had been killed in each of the two previous runnings.
