Track stars impress

Jennifer Simmons, 21, and Ellie Edwards, 15, braved rainy and blustery conditions to secure clear victories at the Greater Manchester Championships in Warrington.

Edwards, representing Trafford AC, drove off hard in the under-17 300m final, maintaining an early lead to finish in a personal best of 42.4 seconds.

Simmons, competing for Sale Harriers in the senior age group, triumphed in both the 400m flat and 400m hurdles events, recording 57.5 and 63.6 respectively.

Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier George Grant, 13, took the Middlesex under-15 pole vault title in Mile End with a personal best of 2.50m.

Several Jewish athletes were in action at the Young Athletes League at Lea Valley Stadium. Harrow all-rounder Jamie Cohen, 13, recorded a high jump personal best of 1.45m, as well as a time of 5:09.4 in the 1,500m.

Shaftesbury Barnet middle distance runners Jessica Hurley, 12, and Natan Bloom, 13, both set PBs, Hurley recording 2:35.7 for 800m and Bloom achieving 4:53.9 for 1,500m. Team-mate Leo Kaye opened his season with 23.9 for 200m, a few days before his 16th birthday.
