Thornes stun Harmen

First half strikes from Jamie Weinrich and Joshua Hambling kept Glenthorne United B unbeaten in their short history after a dominant performance against the Minor Cup finalists Southgate Harmen B.

The Essex boys started brightly and were almost rewarded within 10 minutes when a long-range effort from Matt Conway bounced off the woodwork.

The visitors suffered a major blow when Craig Silver, who had dominated the midfield with his aggressive tackling, broke his wrist. The injury looks set to keep him out of the side until the new year.

The set-back spurred the team on and after 25 minutes, Jamie Weinrich beat the entire Harmen defence before slotting home from 12 yards.

Just before the break captain Joshua Hambling doubled the lead after rifling home from the edge of the area.

Having been lectured by MSFL referee Gary Silver on the new ‘Respect' laws from the FA, a frustrated Harmen received two bookings in the match.

The Thornes were unlucky not to extend their lead in the second half, going close on numerous occasions through Richard Cohen and Elliott Coulton.

Manager Paul Silver reflected: "It was great to see such a determined performance against such a quality side."

The Thornes now go in search of a repeat performance when they face Pure Orange Function Band on Sunday.
