One of the most remarkable matches ever played in the Maccabi Masters League may have signalled the end of an era.

Champions of Division One for the past five seasons, and winners of both league and cup double for the past three years, Brady Maccabi A had – by their own standards – an unspectacular start to the season, but seemed to have recovered their form, and were steadily and ominously moving up the table, like a middle-distance runner who had timed his attack perfectly, cruising into the lead round the final bend.

But that was until Wednesday evening, when they met fellow title hopefuls Glenthorne United A.

The odds against the match ending in a 13-0 victory for Glenthorne may have troubled even the most dedicated bookmaker, but finish that way it did.

A stunning six-goal salvo from Danny Sugarman steered the Thornes towards double figures. Adam Kaye chipped in with a hat-trick, while Jason Levy, Steve Faye, Marc Radzan and Paul Allen completed the rout.

And whilst it might be argued that Glenthorne are now in pole position for the title, they will need to win their remaining two games. Given that these are against the other two teams in the top four – Southgate Harmen, and the current leaders, North London Raiders – the outcome is by no means a formality.

Indeed, Brady themselves are definitely not out of the running either, and won’t give up their title without a fight.

Nevertheless, Brady manager Daniel Collins was generous in his praise of Glenthorne after the match, saying: "Glenthorne were fantastic and never allowed Brady to get into the game; for 90 minutes they pressed and outfought Brady and thoroughly deserved the win."

It’s going to be a fascinating climax to the season.
